I'm fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service

Australia is a big country, and for those living in remote, rural and regional areas, access to immediate care isn’t a guarantee. For some communities, the nearest hospital is eight hours drive away.

This October, I’m taking on a month-long fitness challenge to help more people access the care they need. By going further, I hope to raise as much as possible for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).

Every year, the RFDS reach more than 330,000 Australians with 24-hour emergency retrieval and primary healthcare services. That’s one person every two minutes!

Together, we can keep the Flying Doctor flying and continue their life-saving work. Please donate to my challenge today!

My Updates

Wahoo 55kms in!

Friday 11th Oct
55kms in and I find myself in SA at Mahanewo Station.
Mahanewo Station story comes from Ash Williams.
Thank you for supporting 24/7 aeromedical retrieval
Among the vast expanse of Mahanewo, a remote sheep station more than 400 kilometres north of Adelaide, owner and sixth-generation farmer Ash Williams set off for a day of mustering.
With an estimated 11,000 livestock across 119,000 hectares, the Mahanewo team spend long days covering all corners of the property to gather sheep ahead of shearing season every February. On this occasion, about 25 kilometres from the station’s homestead, an unforgiving dirt track sent Ash flying from his motorbike, knocking him unconscious.
“The next thing I remember was waking up in a daze. It took me a good 30 seconds to realise where I was and that I’d even been on a bike." - Ash
“When I heard the RFDS plane, I remember feeling overwhelming gratitude, but also guilt that they had come all this way for me,” Ash said.
“The timeframe from my accident to being in a hospital bed was amazing – we've gone from the middle of the outback to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a few hours.” - Ash
Without the RFDS team’s expert care, Ash could have been paralysed or had a lung collapse.

Today's story comes from Leia

Wednesday 9th Oct
WA – Pilbara Region story comes from Leia.
Thank you for supporting 24/7 aeromedical retrieval.
Leia was on her first swing in a new job at Fortescue’s Cloudbreak site in the Pilbara when she was overcome by frightening symptoms. She had vertigo, an intensely painful headache, her face had drooped on one side and she was dizzy and confused, struggling to recall her own mother’s name.
The emergency response team at Cloudbreak called upon the RFDS to fly Leia to Port Hedland for urgent medical attention. Tests at the hospital showed she had suffered a cardiac episode, and a scan revealed a damaged artery in her brain. She was then flown to Perth on another RFDS flight, where she was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital.
“I didn’t even know what a stroke was, but I was told I’d had one, and it had damaged both sides of my brain,” said Leia. “And with my heart unable to pump blood to my brain, it caused a stress-induced heart attack.”
“There were times I really thought I was going to die,” Leia said.
“But I was able to get the medication that I needed, which stopped me from suffering another stroke or a heart attack.”
“My doctors say my recovery has been extremely good, and I attribute that to getting medical attention so quickly.” – Leia

Day 4

Friday 4th Oct
17kms in now and I find myself in NT - Remote Barkly Region.Barkly's story comes from Louis.Thank you for supporting 24/7 aeromedical retrieval.Louis Orr, a young city slicker-turned cattle ringer, was enjoying a day off from his job at a station in the remote Barkly Region in the Northern Territory when it took a life-threatening turn. The then 21-year-old and his mates had set off waterskiing at the station’s local watering hole – a popular spot for workers wanting to cool off from the Territory’s extreme heat. On his fifth run for the day, Louis came off second best, falling into the water. When he swam back to his mates and tried pulling himself up onto the jet ski, he realised he couldn’t move his left leg.“I knew something was wrong as soon as I picked my leg up out of the water – it was completely poking out, flopping around and I had no feeling in my ankle” Louis said.“As much pain as I was in, I just thought it was broken or dislocated. I never imagined that it was a life-threatening situation.”Louis was airlifted to the nearest major hospital, Alice Springs, where scans confirmed the worst. With a broken tibia, a severed nerve, three ruptured ligaments in his knee, and no blood flow to his lower leg due to a crushed artery, Louis had only a matter of hours to undergo emergency surgery at the Royal Darwin Hospital for a chance to save his limb.Louis was again airlifted by the RFDS from Alice Springs to Darwin, where on arrival, he had one of the hardest conversations of his life. “In the pre-op room my surgeon told me, ‘Look I’ve seen plenty of people your age lose their leg from conditions like this and gone on to live long lives."
